In mathematics education, number sense refers to "an intuitive understanding of numbers, their magnitude, relationships, and how they are affected by operations."
Memorizing algorithms can cause confusion.
Please do not teach your 2nd grader how to use it until they have a strong understanding of numbers. It is a shortcut that will keep them from developing number sense.
“Teaching only standard algorithms changes the focus to individual digits, instead of on whole quantities and the relationships between the quantities. The learning goal becomes mastering a series of steps rather than understanding the meaning and use of the mathematical operation.”
Susan Jo Russell in Relearning to Teach Arithmetic
Examples of 2nd Grade Computation Strategies
“The ability to think about numbers in
many different ways is what
makes a person good in math.”
Greg Tang

We believe it is important to let children fail in a supportive environment so that they will learn that there are consequences to their choices and that they are responsible for the choices they make. Read below for a parent perspective.
