Monarchs look like they have skin, but it is really an exoskeleton. As they grow they molt or crawl out of their exoskeleton. | The caterpillar is hanging in a j shape right before it molts for the last time to reveal it's chrysalis. A chrysalis (cr - e - su - lis) is a safe place for the caterpillar to change into a butterfly. |

We are raising painted lady caterpillars in cups. They ate mushed up mallow. As they grew, they molted and crawled out of their exoskelton. They also pooped a lot. Caterpillar poop is called frass.
